The Kwawachee Counseling Center (KCC) at PTHA has started a new incentive based program to encourage clients to stay healthy. This month they will be opening the “Trading Post,” a program designed to reward clients of KCC who keep all of their scheduled appointments and follow through with their treatment plan.
The “Trading Post” is designed within the concept of the Trading Bead System which goes back many hundreds of years ago. It was a major source of trade with the Native Americans and included items such as; seashells, hollowed bone, claws and teeth, small stones and tortoise shells.
What is the “Trading Post” at KCC?
The “Trading Post” at KCC is a place with items such as jackets, shirts, pants, hygiene products and various other goods that clients can exchange for their Trading Beads. Each Trading Bead has a point value and all items at the “Trading Post” have a point value and will be available for trade.
How can clients receive Trading Beads?
Each KCC client who meets and keeps 75-100% of all scheduled appointments within a given time period will be credited Trading Beads. After a client feels he or she has met the requirements they can request their Trading Beads at the front desk and then the trading begins!
KCC hopes this ancient tradition of trading will encourage clients to continue making healthy living choices by rewarding those choices with great goods at the “Trading Post.” Healthy living is a choice, but more so it’s our tradition.
