Legalize Frostitution

Posted by Jill Russell on August 21, 2009 at 2:20 pm

So far, it's been an exciting week in the world of cupcakes.

Today, Seattle's "Cupcake Royale" (1111 E. Pike Street) is giving away their cupcake of the month for free to partons who utter the words, "Legalize Frostitution."

In other pastery news...

On Saturday (7-18) Minneapolis has concocted the world's largest cupcake, according to the Guinness World Book of Records. The 1-foot tall, 2-feet wide cavity-inducing treat was made by cakes.com and featured 15 pounds of fudge filling and 60 pounds of yellow icing. It was displayed in the Mall of America. Soon after, the treat was donated to a local pig farm. Check out the full story and a photo of the beast on the News Tribune's website:

Project laborers Charles Graham (left) and Michael Joseph (center) talk to Field Representative Brian Belarde, at the I-5 HOV construction project groundbreaking ceremony on Aug. 14 in Fife.

Rich McKinney and Michael Joseph will wake up each morning and go to work, unaware of what their day might entail. They don’t even know how long their jobs will be around, but they are just happy to have the opportunity.
“I’m excited, my family’s excited, my wife’s excited,” said McKinney. “Hopefully things will start turning around. You get a little emotional when you talk about it.”
“I got bills to pay,” Joseph said.
The men are part of a labor crew that will widen I-5 for HOV lanes in each direction between the Port of Tacoma Road and the King/Pierce County line. The project will also include widening six bridges crossing Wapato Creek and Hylebos Creek. The lanes are scheduled to be open to traffic in late 2011.
The total estimated cost of the project is $61.4 million. Funding for this project comes from multiple sources, including Read More…

Illegally posted signs like these will be removed by Pierce County roads crews beginning today.

Although some cities, such as Fife, already have strict sign enforcement in place, the county has ramped up its own efforts. Road crews are set to begin removing illegally-placed signs in the right of way following the recent agreement involving Pierce County Executive Pat McCarthy, the County Council, and Public Works and Utilities.

Illegal sign removal will begin county-wide today. The initial roundup is expected to take up to three weeks to complete to the tune of $95k taxpayer dollars per year.

After that, the worst intersections will be revisited monthly, and high volume arterial roads will be swept quarterly. As illegal sign volumes drop at any given location, the next worst spots will be targeted.

Brian Ziegler, director of Public Works and Utilities said this in a Pierce County press release:

"These private signs in the public's right of way are illegal and will be treated as Read More…

COOLING OFF. Ariel Saumani, 2, finds a way to cool off on July 28 at Jefferson Park in Tacoma.

For the remainder of the week, the South Sound will be a sweltering inferno. The National Weather Service predicts temps to max out in the high 90s, with the hottest day being on Wednesday - upwards of 99 degrees! Local agencies, organizations and businesses have joined forces to help communities beat the heat. All 17 Pierce County Libraries have opened their doors as a free oasis to cool off. The libraries are also promoting their annual youth Summer Reading challenge, which offers incentives like free zoo passes and electronics to children and teens who meet their reading goals.

The Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department is also issuing a heat warning throughout the county. The most vulnerable groups are elderly and children. The Center for Disease Control estimates that approximately 688 people die each year from exposure to extreme heat.
Some symptoms of heat exhaustion are fatigue, headache, muscle cramps, Read More…

Here's to you VHS tapes.

A VHS tape. a "Marathon bar". A card catalog.

These are just some of the 100 items children born today and growing up tomorrow may never know, according to a list compiled by Wired.com. The 40th anniverseryof the moon landing this year has many people thinking about how far we've come technologically and how far we still have to go. As we keep plugging along, sit back and remember the good ol' times when we actually had to "rewind" a movie to watch it again, or reading directions on an actual map. Wait, do they still have those things around?

Students watch a "mock surgery" preformed by a DaVinci Surgery Robot at St. Joseph Hospital.

About 75 Fife and Tacoma students entering ninth grade this fall are donning scrubs and rubber gloves this summer. They are members of the Franciscian Healthcare Network's Health Adventures program, a summer medical camp held throughout the South Sound. The goal of the camps is to expose kids, at an early age, to the healthcare industy and hopefully spark interest in the field as a possible future career, explained Gale Robinette, media relations manager for Tacoma's St. Jospeh Hospital.

"The program is celebrating its 10 year, we started in 2000," said Robinette. "Next year, we plan to expand the program to St. Anthony's in Gig Harbor."

Students at St. Joe's worked with trained Registered Nurses, learned proper cleansing and dressing techniques, and had their gag reflexes tested by dissecting various animal organs. This was Tacoma Student, Jacy Torres' favorite part.

"I really like the pathology lesson and loved the body Read More…
